Irish Shellfish Producer to Open Oat Milk Facility in Light of Declining Demand for Seafoo

Having identified a growing market in the production of plant-based products, Irish shellfish producer Errigal Bay is planning an oat milk facility in the county of Donegal, in an area originally intended as a seafood cold store, which the company no longer sees as viable, according to a report at vegconomist.com. A third of Irish consumers were buying more plant-based meat and dairy alternatives than they were three years hence, motivated by climate and health concerns, according to a cited study, with dairy alternatives in particular “on the cusp of entering the mainstream” in the country. With its change of business, Errigal Bay intends to protect its existing employees and create further job opportunities. Using oats grown in the nearby Finn Valley and rapeseed oil sourced from within Donegal, the new facility will also help support local farmers. Byproducts will be used for consumer foods, health products, and animal feed.
